Placidium squamulosum (Catapyrenium squamulosum)

Chemical results negative

Found on calcareous soils, sand and humus and sometimes associated with cyanobacterial crusts.

Thick pale to dark brown, irregularly shaped squamules (2-7 mm diameter) attached to the substrate by hyaline to dark brown rhizoidal hyphae. Perithecia completely immersed with only the dark ostioles visible. The asci are 8-spored, spores simple, 12-16 x 5.5-7.5 µm. Micrograph below.
