Growth type crustose
Chemical reactions usually negative, occasionally K+ pale yellow.

Tolerant of pollution and inorganic fertilisers and is common on nutrient-rich bark and wood. Also found on stony debris and bird-perching rocks

Can be very variable. Thallus is pale grey to dark greenish-grey, rarely with a darker prothallus. The flat or slightly convex small black apothecia have thin margins. Spores 1-septate, 10-18 x 5-10 µm, becoming brown when mature. Pycnidia sparse. Microscope photographs below.

Similar: Lecidella elaeochroma. C+ orange, UV+ orange. Simple spores. Amandinea lecideina is infrequent, on siliceous coastal rocks
