Zyzygomyces physciacearum # (Heterocephalacria physciacearum, Syzygospora physciacearum)

Lichenicolous fungus. Photographs on Physcia tenella

Infrequently recorded on Physcia species including Physcia aipolia and Physcia tenella. Also on Phaeophyscia orbicularis and Physconia grisea.

Irregular whitish, pinkish, brown or black fruit bodies develop on the thallus or apothecial margins of the host. Basidia are (2-)3-4 spored, basidiospores ellipsoid to oval, 7.5-11 x 3.5-6.5 µm.

Similar: Syzygospora bachmannii forms galls on Cladonia species. Tremella christiansenii. Not yet known in Britain or Ireland but recorded elsewhere on Physcia stellaris and P. tenella. The basidia are +/- globose
